After temple cleaning, Maura High read from her recent book, The Field Index, a celebration of the Piedmont ecology, which won the 2023 Terrain Poetry Prize. She also included a few other pieces on observations and meditations in nature.
Chris and Zenki acquired 3 sets of Baika bells and have begun practicing the skills learned at the Baikaryu Eisanka workshop with Hoko Karnegis last Summer. Baikaryu Eisanka is the practice of singing Japanese Soto Zen Buddhist hymns. The singing is accompanied by these beautiful bells. With the hopes of offering Baikaryu Eisanka practice, we plan to have an introductory session on Saturday, May 25.
Steve Magers designed an outdoor shelter and led volunteers in constructing it. Some of us learned new valuable construction skills in the process. This shelter will be used during Outdoor Half-day Sittings and other outdoor events and will provide a space to stay dry while watching the rain.

We had a lovely celebration of Buddha’s Enlightenment Sunday, December 10th with many families and children present.
This year was the first year we had a drum accompaniment. Ken played the traditional drum pattern on his ngoma as we chanted the Heart Sutra in Japanese and circumambulated the zendo. The ceremony was followed by a joyful potluck reception.
Logan Daishi Hokai — Great Resolve, Dharma Ocean — received the the Precepts at Forest City Zen Group in London, Ontario from Kuden Paul Boyle on November 18, 2023. Zenki Kathleen Batson was on hand to assist during this joyous occasion.

Josho Pat Phelan Roshi and the Board of Directors Installed Zenki Kathleen Batson as Vice Abbess of Chapel Hill Zen Center in a short ceremony attended by many Sangha Members.
Over the Winter Break December 27, 2022 – January 3, 2023, Josho Pat Phelan Roshi gave Dharma Transmission to Kuden Paul Boyle, Jakuko Mo Ferrell, and Zenki Kathleen Batson.
